Outlook Constantly Asks for Password

When you open outlook or check mail after a while and it asks for your password, even if you checked the "Remember password" checkbox, then the issue could be a corrupted password cache.  One solution to resolve this is to remove / rename the password cache folder to force outlook to retreive the password from its database.

Windows 7 / 8 / Vista:

  1. Close Outlook
  2. Open a Windows explorer window or go to Start -> My Computer
  3. In the Windows Explorer address bar put in:  %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\
  4. Find the folder named "Protect"
  5. Rename the folder "Protect" to "Protect-old" or similiar name
  6. Open Outlook
  7. If it asks for your password, enter it and make sure to check the "Remember password" checkbox.
  8. You should be all set now.

Windows XP:

Windows XP requires you to edit the registry to over come this issue and as such this isn't recommended.

  1. In regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\RPC
    1. if the RPC key does not exist, create a new one
  2. Create a new DWORD under the RPC key called UseWindowsUserCredentials
  3. In UseWindowsUserCredentials, put ONE of the following values determined under your environment:
    • In a Domain with Exchange: 0
    • Not in a Domain with Exchange: 1
    • Not in Domain or In a domain otherwise: 1
  4. Close regedit
  5. Open Outlook and confirm password and remember to save password if asked
  6. You should be set.
